The English Country Chair is the product of forty-some years I have spent designing and crafting custom furniture. Throughout my career I have reproduced several different styles of chair, from the antiques of the Provence style to the colonial furniture of New England and Canada. The English Country Chair is a design that evokes a range of influence, from Sheraton period and Regency period furniture and the rush seating of the Hitchcock chair of Connecticut. My aim was to design a chair that was distinctive and practical, but also stylish enough to be considered along with the popular Windsor chairs and French country chairs.

This chair has modern dimensions with hand crafted workmanship that gives it an heirloom quality. The curve of the arm from the Regency period chair, the lining of the Sheraton period chairs and the hand turnings and rush seating found in the Hitchcock chairs makes this one of the finer hand crafted chairs available today. The custom finish is hand rubbed and polished. The rush seating is tightly woven on the chair frame and is protected by an oil based finish. The result is an elegant and comfortable chair with a sophisticated country charm. The rustic look of quarter sawn oak, honey colored maple and the formal touch of hand painting, adds versatility to this cleanly designed furniture piece.

Where French country chairs and Windsor style chairs might be used in country kitchens and dining rooms and as occasional chairs in living roooms dens and bedrooms imagine the English Country Chair. I have shipped my chairs across Canada and in the US to clients who know and value quality in hand crafted chairs. I build my chairs with the kind of care and attention to detail found in fine Windsor chairs and French country chairs. They are availble in birch maple and oak and custom finished to your specifications. I guaranty to deliver an enduring and beautiful chair worthy of being passed on to future generations.

Cheers, Ian Birchall
